Keeping Glacier real in 2021: The Great and Powerful Oz.
Original Post Date 9/3/21
Yeah, I gave some of the fellow RV Park people nicknames based on the Wizard of Oz behind their backs. Why? Why not? Let me share with you the talented cast I had the pleasure to work with this summer. Note: alcohol may have been involved.
Dorthy
A first year Jammer driver, Marileigh came all the way from Florida. When the tourists would complain of road construction dust sticking to them on hot days, she would tell them to enjoy their ‘complimentary Montana spray tan.’ I will definitely use that one. I hope she remembers to resole those great Chaco sandles before the sole wears in to the foot bed, and promise I will NEVER touch her two gallon jug of ****** cheeseballs (again).
Enjoy Yellowstone this winter, and never lose what I can only call that ‘Florida Edge.’ If I’m ever in Melrose FL, I know which gas station to hit for fresh bait and a beer. Just as long as that ‘divorce curse’ is only transferable by ownership, not when topping off the tank.
Glinda the Good Witch
Lorraine hailed from the Bay area and eventually became the Red Bus concierge at Lake McDonald Lodge. Yeah, it really bites when you are about to start your career as event planner and Covid takes the world by storm.
The only person I have ever met who bought a new car based on the dealership being ‘nice.’ Continue your life journey of kindness. And always pack spare automotive fuses for all your 12-volt Subaru needs.
The Great and Powerful Oz
Ethan was a proud Portlander (OR, not ME), and had plenty of plaid shirts and a Subaru to keep them in to prove it. He drove a LOT of miles in the warehouse trucks, taking merchandise all over the park. He drove so much he actually quit, but gave five weeks notice. First time ever in the history of the world that a seasonal employee actually gave notice, let alone over a month.
Go forth and be a modern roving nomadic Christopher Columbus (without all that indigenous people genocide stuff). Just know that I never thought I’d Karaoke ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ with another man, but I’m glad I did and will always treasure the experience.
The Lion
The only thing bigger than Partrick’s heart was his arm span (which would rival a California Condor). That made him a natural at making beds in housekeeping. Two flaps and a snap, and the sheets were on and you could bounce a quarter off them.
Continue with courage thru life, as you take on one horrible seasonal manager at a time. Teaching aspirations are definitely your guiding light. Just remember when you are looking for a pickup basketball game in the bustling city of Columbia Falls, most people are only at the park that time of day because they are too drunk to fish.
The Tin Man
Unfortunately ‘Don’ (as some called him) is in the witness protection program. Photo and Bio just a little redacted.
The Scarecrow
There have been many interpretations of the Scarecrow character in Wizard of Oz movies and theater. But this one scared the hell out of me more than those terrifying flying monkeys. It is so frightening in fact, you have to keep it locked away in a freezer. In the dark. And you are still not safe.
A truly wonderful and goofy bunch. Plus if you don’t count Patrick, I appear to be a giant of a man with this crowd at a mere five foot eight.
Let me end this post with Natasha Bedingfield big hit “Unwritten” from 2004. I think Marileigh and Lorrain’s karaoke version was better. Or maybe just different. The Scarecrow definitely played a part.
